When families ask about Sixth Form and A levels, the conversation often starts with results and university destinations. In my experience, what they are really asking is something deeper: Will my child be ready — academically and personally — for what comes next?
A strong Sixth Form is not built in isolation. It grows out of the habits, expectations and confidence developed well before students reach A level study. At Charterhouse Lagos, our work in Sixth Form is very closely connected to everything that comes before.
Over the years, I have seen that students who thrive in the Sixth Form are rarely shaped by their final two years alone. What matters most is what happens earlier — particularly in the years leading into Year 10 (IGCSE). Strong preparation allows students to flourish in the Sixth Form and to take advantage of all the other opportunities that are offered beyond the purely academic curriculum.
At Charterhouse Lagos, our IGCSE programme combines the rigour of the British curriculum with strong personal values, helping students develop the discipline and character they need to succeed. Modern science labs, art studios and specialist learning spaces bring subjects to life here in Nigeria, without the need for students to travel overseas.
What stands out most, however, is not just academic progress. Students begin to take greater responsibility for their learning, to work more confidently with others, and to develop the resilience that A level study demands.
By the time students reach Year 12 (A level), those foundations matter. A level study requires independence, focus and the ability to think beyond examinations.
Our A level programme is designed to prepare students for entry to the world’s leading universities in the UK, US, Canada and Europe, combining academic rigour with personalised guidance and leadership development. Students are supported by an experienced international leadership team who bring global best practice and careful university preparation to each learner.
As part of the Charterhouse family of schools, founded in 1611, our Sixth Form benefits from over 400 years of educational heritage — but what matters most to me is how that heritage is applied today: with high expectations, clear support, and a modern understanding of what young people need to succeed.
For families who would like to explore this thinking in more depth, we will be hosting a LinkedIn Live conversation on Friday 16 January, focused specifically on A levels at Charterhouse Lagos. It will be an opportunity to hear directly about academic expectations, subject pathways and how we support students as they prepare for life beyond school.
While much of this post looks ahead to IGCSE and A levels launching in September 2026, our school is very much a place for families at every stage.
Our Open Days and school visits are designed for:
Seeing the school in action — lessons underway, boarding routines, relationships between staff and students — often helps families understand how these pathways connect over time.
Great Sixth Forms are not created by acceleration or pressure. They are built through clear values, strong teaching and thoughtful preparation over many years.
That is what we are committed to at Charterhouse Lagos: a British academic education rooted in Nigeria, offering families confidence at every stage of their child’s journey — from Primary through to Sixth Form and beyond.
Families are welcome to visit the school throughout the term, attend our Open Day later this month, or join us online to continue the conversation.
